As they did shortly after the first movie hit theaters, producers behind The Expendables are now spreading word about what to expect in The Expendables 3. Yes, there's going to be a third movie in the action-star franchise that added Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Liam Hemsworth to their roster for the second outing. The Expendables 2 hits theaters August 17 and in advance of its release, producer Avi Lerner spoke with Total Film about the film.
Nicolas Cage is said to already be set to appear in the film, though in what capacity and role has not been revealed. Lerner said that he is still trying to lock down a few more big names, including Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford and Wesley Snipes.
"We've approached Clint Eastwood to be one of the guys, we've got a character in mind for him. We're talking to Harrison Ford. And we want Wesley Snipes when he comes back from prison. I'll give you one more name, we've got Nicolas Cage to play one of the characters. And we're going to bring Mickey Rourke back, if he won't be too crazy. I like Mickey. And of course, all the existing stars will return."
Snipes is scheduled to be released from federal prison on July 19, 2013, so he could certainly be a part of the third Expendables movie should all the behind-the-scenes business deals are worked out.
Ford seems like a longshot, although he has been content taking on supporting roles in his recent films and if any series boasts a haven for ensemble acting, it's The Expendables.
Eastwood might be the biggest question mark. If Lerner is able to get him, it would be a huge score for the franchise and threequel, but the 82-year-old actor is extremely picky about the movies he appears in. If he were to agree, he'd most likely make a one scene cameo appearance, a la Schwarzenegger in the first film.
What do you think of these potential additions? What role do you think Cage will be playing? Who else would you like to see added to this third film – Steven Segal, Jackie Chan, Kurt Russell?
