'The Cove' Filmmakers Kickstart a 'Heist'

Back in 2009, The Cove came out of nowhere, winning the Best Documentary Oscar and shining a light on the mass murder of dolphins in Japan. While the hunt still takes place between September and March, the gang of rogue activists have certainly had an impact on the annual dolphin slaughter, with various political officials and citizens taking a stand against the annual killing.

Now those same filmmakers have announced their net project, via Kickstarter, and it's called The Heist.

The Cove director Louie Psihoyos has taken to Kickstarter to raise $50,000 for the new film which will involve their team infiltrating some potentially dangerous places as they fight to save certain animals before they're wiped off the planet forever. Though half the film has already been shot, Psihoyos says they're missing "one crucial element." Enter Kickstarter.

Here's their official release:

"The team that infiltrated The Cove is back—with some new faces—to hatch a plan even bigger and bolder than the last. We're bringing the sights and sounds of species on the brink of extinction to the front of the world stage, in an event that will forever change what it means to take action for the planet. Departing from the confines of a traditional documentary, the film will capture the drastic measures necessary for initiating cultural change while inspiring millions of viewers to join our mission."

No word on when we'll see The Heist, though it's sure to turn up at a film festival somewhere next year.
