'The Bourne Legacy' Movie Won't Feature Damon or Jason Bourne

Good news for you Jason Bourne fans is we will be getting a fourth installment in the 'Bourne' franchise called 'The Bourne Legacy.' Bad news: The film won't feature the character of Jason Bourne, nor will it star Matt Damon. Um, what?

The Bourne Legacy

Speaking to Hollywood Elsewhere, The Bourne Legacy director Tony Gilroy says that the film will not be a remake or a reboot, but instead will simply continue along in the series by focusing on a new hero instead of Jason Bourne. This comes despite the fact that 'The Bourne Legacy' actually exists as a book, and follows the exploits of Jason Bourne following The Bourne Ultimatum. Chances are they didn't go that route because Damon and director Paul Greengrass both passed on returning, forcing the studio to go in a different direction in order to keep a very lucrative franchise alive.
That being said, don't rule out Jason Bourne returning to the franchise at some point. Gilroy notes, "The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal. Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he's very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I'm building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy...the world we're making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne's return [down the road]."
Do you think the franchise will be as successful without Jason Bourne and Matt Damon in the picture?
