'The Avengers 2' Confirms a May 2015 Release Date
If you did the math, a May 1, 2015 opening seemed logical for Joss Whedon’s The Avengers 2.
Marvel Studios likes being the first summer blockbuster out of the gate. (See the original Avengers, as well as Iron Man 3’s May 3, 2013 scheduled release). And the studio has announced enough programming to keep them busy through the end of 2014, with sequels for Thor and Captain America on the horizon.
We’d speculated, but Marvel Studios today confirmed that Whedon’s expected blockbuster will hit theaters on May 1, 2015.
The release tells us what we already knew: Whedon will return to write and direct his follow up, which should put Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) against an intergalactic threat. We might even see new characters, like Wasp and Ant-Man, if rumors are to be believed.
Marvel’s The Avengers earned a staggering $1.4 billion worldwide. It is the highest-grossing film for 2012, and the third-highest-grossing film of all time … far behind James Cameron’s Titanic and Avatar.
Right now, only three other films have staked claims on 2015 release dates: An untitled Pixar film (June 19), The Smurfs 3 (July 24) and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (Nov. 20). We’ll see if those dates stick, and if something moves into May to possibly challenge the Avengers sequel.
