'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Casts Chris Cooper as the Green Goblin

Batman has the Joker. Superman has Lex Luthor. And Spider-Man has Norman Osborn … aka, the Green Goblin. So while Marc Webb cast Paul Giamatti and Jamie Foxx to play The Rhino and Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, true Spidey fans waited patiently for the casting announcement telling us whom would play Osborn.
Today, we learn it will be Chris Cooper!
THR breaks the news that the American Beauty star – who won an Oscar for his work in Adaptation – has joined the franchise as Norman Osborn, father to Harry (Dane DeHaan) and overseer of Oscorp, the root of all evil in Webb’s reimagined Spider-Man universe.
The trade story does not elaborate on whether Cooper will morph into the Goblin in the next movie, or if he is simply being brought into the fold for future movies. They do acknowledge that the character is “pivotal” to the Spider-Man franchise, so casting someone of Cooper’s ilk is a brilliant stroke for both Webb and Sony, which seems to be laying the groundwork for a massive, long-term Spider-Man universe on screen.
I think it’s perfect casting. Cooper joins an already stacked ensemble that includes Andrew Garfield, Sally Field, Emma Stone, Foxx, Giamatti and Shailene Woodley. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is shaping up to be a head-spinning, web-slinging blockbuster. What do you think of the casting? Is Cooper the right guy to bring Norman Osborn back to the big screen?
