The Joss Whedon-co-scripted, Drew Goddard-directed The Cabin in the Woods has had a long road to release, however, unlike most films that sit on a distributor's shelf collecting dust for years, this isn't a case of a movie not being good enough for the big screen. Lionsgate has finally rescued the film from MGM's unfortunate financial woes and the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, TX has selected it as its opening night film. Wisely so, we might add.
We happened to catch the film at BNAT13 and have seen firsthand how it reduces seasoned film geeks to raucous puddles of genre-loving glee. Trust us when we say the official world premiere of this film, which stars Kristen Connolly, Fran Kranz, Chris Hemsworth, Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford, is not to be missed and we guarantee its twist on the traditional horror movie formula is going to shake the pillars of the Paramount theater by the time the credits roll on March 10th, 2012.
Cabin in the Woods isn't the only title SXSW has to share today, either. Their full lineup will be announced in the weeks to come, but today they've announced the world premiere of the first three episodes of Girls, the HBO series created by SXSW veterans Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture) and producer Judd Apatow.
