'Super 8' is Not a 'Cloverfield' Sequel – New Details Revealed!

Steven Spielberg and J.J. AbramsWith the mysterious J.J. Abrams trailer set to arrive in front of Iron Man 2 in theaters tonight at midnight, word is beginning to leak out that, contrary to what other folks have reported, this film has nothing at all to do with Cloverfield. Instead, it looks like this is the project we reported on not too long ago that involved Abrams teaming up with Steven Spielberg – the one that was supposedly set in the late '70s, early '80s and was in the vein of Close Encounters and E.T.

Abrams himself has gone on record as saying Super 8 has nothing to do with Cloverfield, but Slashfilm took things one step further by sharing with us a detailed account of the entire trailer. I'm not going to spoil it over here because that wouldn't be right (head over there to read the full description), but I will say that it's written and directed by J.J. Abrams, produced by Steven Spielberg Entertainment and due out next summer.

As far as plot goes, it appears as if we're going to get a vintage Spielberg-like flick about a bunch of ordinary people from the suburbs who discover something that…well, let's just say it isn't very ordinary. Truth be told, I'm much more excited for this than I would be for a Cloverfield sequel. Cloverfield was cool and all, but it's basically just your everyday generic monster movie. This film, on the other hand, sounds like it has a lot more meat on its bones. Very excited to see what Abrams does with it.

What about you? Would you rather see a Cloverfield sequel or something entirely new and different from a J.J. Abrams/Steven Spielberg partnership?
