'Star Wars' Heading to Blu-ray with More Sequels Planned?

You didn't have to be some intergalactic genius to predict that the Star Wars films would eventually hit Blu-ray. George Lucas and Co. usually figure out a way to incorporate new technology into their existing Star Wars franchise – and though rumors of Lucas converting the original Star Wars films to 3D are still in the whispered-about stage, it looks like we'll at least be getting all six films on Blu-ray at some point in the near future (word has it the set may drop in October 2011).

Speaking at the C2E2 Convention, Lucasfilm's Steve Sansweet said this about the upcoming set: "We have been at work for a couple of years working on—I won't call it the Ultimate Set because we keep finding stuff—but, a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material. We're finding all kinds of scenes from dailies that have never been seen before. Beyond all of those things that you know about…there are some real treasures."
That's not all the news, though, as the return of characters like Luke, Leia and Han Solo was also teased. Are we getting another sequel – perhaps one that would take place after Return of the Jedi? Well, not quite – when asked about whether we'll ever get to see those iconic characters again, Sansweet said that we will "in the new animation." What he's referring to is a new animated television series that will arrive in about 3 or 4 years, and it will probably look something like the Clone Wars animated series does now. However, he may also be referring to the recently-announced comedic series from Seth Green – and if that's the case, then I wouldn't take the return of these characters too seriously because in all likelihood they won't be tied to the mythology of the films and they definitely won't be taking themselves too seriously.
Not exactly the way I'd like to see Luke, Han and Leia make a return, but I guess it's better than nothing…right?
