'Spider-Man' Spin-offs Confirmed! Venom and Sinister Six on the Way

“Think bigger” has been the unofficial mantra of Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man universe. Multiple villains. Multiple supporting characters. And now, multiple spin-offs.
Sony Pictures announced that it has plans for several Spider-Man spin-off movies in the future, including a movie centered on the evil Venom and the menacing team the Sinister Six. It’s unclear as to whether this will be the basis of the already-announced The Amazing Spider-Man 4, or something entirely different. Five screenwriters have been hired to shepherd this growing franchise, including Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who penned Webb’s ASM 2.
“This collaboration was born out of the great experience we and Marc had working with [the team] on The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach said. “With more than 50 years’ wealth of stories in the comic books to draw upon for inspiration, the Spider-Man universe is truly boundless; in addition, the Spider-Man comics have the greatest rogues gallery of any series, and to have the chance to explore that on film is truly thrilling.”
Did you see the trailer for next summer’s Amazing Spider-Man 2? There are hints sprinkled all throughout the footage about the Sinister Six villains and Venom… all of which will be connected to OsCorp (in some fashion). Here’s the trailer. Give it another spin:

So clearly, Sony wants to follow the successful Marvel blueprint of world building, basing several films around a popular character. It’s unclear at this very early stage where Andrew Garfield fits in the future plans. He’s signed through the next two films at the very least. After that, the negotiations will begin.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be in theaters on May 2, 2014, kicking off the summer blockbuster season with a sticky bang. What do you think of this exciting news? Share your thoughts below!
