Sound Off is a weekly theater-related discussion post here at Fandango where we talk about the past, present and future of moviegoing.
There's a big difference between watching a movie at home or in a theater, and those differences certainly make themselves known when it comes to scary movies. At home, scary movies become more personal because you watch them in rooms you're in all the time, making it so every little noise is that much more intimate and terrifying. In a theater, however, scary movies and the scares included within are celebrated as a more communal experience, with screams, shouts and flying body parts heard and felt all throughout the darkened space.
Each venue has its advantages, but for this week's Sound Off column I want to focus specifically on the movie theater. Now that it's October and we're about to witness a whole bunch of scary movies pass through our local theaters, I'd like us to talk about which movies scared us the most when we watched them on the big screen.
The topic was inspired by my screening of Sinister at Fantastic Fest. Look, I'll admit to being a bit of a chump when it comes to horror movies, but I appreciate films that are able to scare you silly without having to throw buckets of blood everywhere. Sinister is that kind of movie, and damn was I scared -- to the point that I don't even remember the last time I was scared the way I was watching Sinister.
So that's my choice, and now it's your turn. With Frankenweenie arriving this weekend, and Sinister and Paranormal Activity 4 just two of the bigger scary movies hitting theaters later this month, take a look back and tell me what movie scared you the most on the big screen.
