Sound Off is a weekly theater-related discussion post here at Fandango where we talk about topical issues related to moviegoing.
With Skyfall dropping a whole ton of awesome on US movie theaters this weekend after it's already set some monster box office records in the UK, it's pretty safe to say the latest James Bond installment will easily take the top spot at the weekend box office. So now that we've established that fact, we can move onto more important conversations -- like how much money do you think this super spy is going to make between now and Monday morning?
According to our stats wizards here at Fandango, Skyfall currently represents about 65% of today's ticket sales, which means two things: a) This is the movie everyone is going to see this weekend, and b) You better start buying your tickets because we're probably going to see more than a few sold-out shows, especially Friday and Saturday night.
So where do we start? Well sticking solely with Daniel Craig's Bond movies, Casino Royale took in $40 million in its opening weekend, while Quantum of Solace did $67 million in business. Considering the fact that Skyfall has already grossed over $300 million worldwide (yes, seriously), there's a good chance we're going to open north of $80 million here, and maybe even $100 million.
But that's where I leave it to you, Bond fans. Sound off below with your guesses as to how much Skyfall makes this weekend. The person who comes closest gets a virtual high-five from me, and maybe I'll even give you a shout out in next week's column.
Ready ... go!
