Shailene Woodley and Theo James Explain the Factions in 'Divergent'

It seems as though there's this never-ending search for the next best thing in the young adult book-to-film adaptation world. What will trump The Twilight Saga? What will match the success of The Hunger Games? With the growing craze, there are loads of possibilities out there, but the one I've got my money on is Neil Burger's Divergent.

The Gist

The story takes place in a future world where society is divided up into five factions based on a person's core values. Abnegation is for those who honor selflessness, Dauntless is for the brave, Erudite focuses on intelligence, Candor is rooted in honesty, and Amity in peace. Shailene Woodley's Beatrice Prior is born into Abnegation, but come the Choosing Ceremony, she'll have the chance to decide whether to stick with her family or leave them behind for a new faction.

At this year's Comic-Con

Just before hitting Hall H for their highly anticipated panel, Woodley and costar Theo James who plays Four, Beatrice's faction initiation instructor, sat down to run through the challenges of bringing Veronica Roth's book to life, their hopes for the film, and even their own personal faction preferences.

Both James and Woodley suspect they wouldn't fit into a single faction and would be dubbed "Divergent," but if presented with the opportunity to choose, James admitted, "I would chose probably Dauntless because they have the most fun." The right path wasn't as clear for Woodley who pointed out, "If I had to choose one, I don't think I could choose between Amity and Dauntless. They're both so me."

Said Woodley:

"I've never done an action movie before… it took me a while to sort of get the swing of it. I don't know if I ever fully did. And there were a few lines that everybody was like, ‘Well, you have to say this because it's an action movie and this line makes sense in this situation.' I was like, ‘But this  would never happen in real life! We can't say this!'"

You can catch more of our chat with Woodley and James in the video below, and keep an eye out for more Divergent talk with cast members Maggie Q, Ben Lamb, Ansel Elgort and Mekhi Phifer coming soon.
