'Sex and the City' Prequel on the Way?

Though Sex and the City 2 didn't do as well as we all thought it would at the box office this past weekend, that doesn't mean there isn't money still to be made from these characters. According to EOnline, New Line is beginning to think about adapting Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell's newest book, The Carrie Diaries, which is sort of like a prequel to Sex and the City in that it follows the character of Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker in the movies and on the TV show) through the trials and tribulations of high school.

The Carrie Diaries

Unfortunately for fans, none of the other Sex and the City regulars make appearances (like Miranda, Charlotte or Samantha), and so this is just a straight-up Carrie adventure. Plus, since it's a high school comedy of sorts, it'll appeal to a different kind of audience. Sure, SaTC fans might want to see it to know what Carrie was like as a girl, but I don't see packs of thirtysomething women all running out to watch a girl with high school problems.
That said, New Line could extend the franchise and pull in a whole new audience that they might be able to entertain long enough till it's time to introduce them to the more mature, adult efforts. Bushnell originally pictured someone like Miley Cyrus playing a younger Carrie, which could work (if you like Cyrus), especially since her casting comes with a built-in audience of young girls who will eventually grow up and want to see more of the Sex and the City universe.
What do you think? Have you read The Carrie Diaries? Would you go see a high school-set Sex and the City prequel?
