See an Incredible Abandoned Movie Theater Rotting Away in the Egyptian Desert

Estonian photographer Kaupo Kikkas discovered an abandoned movie theater hidden in the Sinai desert. According to the photographer’s blog, a wealthy man from France purchased vintage movie-theater seats from Cairo to build an outdoor cinema. After hauling a massive generator and screen to the site, his dream was brought to life.

However, the cinema was not well received by several locals who sabotaged the generator. No films were ever screened, and the theater was left abandoned in the desert.

For those of you wondering if Kikkas’ story is real or just a creative work of fiction, website Design Boom directs doubters to a Google Maps image that reveals the location of Kikkas’ lost cinema. Kikkas’ photographs are stunning and certainly worthy of attention. The images recall the abandoned Star Wars set, which was the subject of a documentary short we wrote about last year. Watch that here.
