Scoop This: 'Area 51', 'Jonah Hex' and 'Predators'

Paramount Nabs Peli's 'Paranormal Activity' Follow-up, 'Area 51'

After taking a chance on the no-budget ghost story Paranormal Activity and then watching it score over $100 million at the box office, I don't blame Paramount for taking another chance on director Oren Peli's follow-up film, Area 51. Shot with the same sort of found-footage look, Area 51 comes equipped with a larger budget (of $5 million, versus Paranormal's $11,000) and it follows a group of friends who, curious, figure out a way to venture onto the mysterious Area 51 military base. One imagines they'll uncover all kinds of other-worldly things once inside, though we'll have to see for ourselves when Paramount rolls this thing out in 2010. Are you interested, or do you think Peli was a one-hit wonder? [Variety]

First 'Jonah Hex' Image and Synopsis

Folks craving more Megan Fox will have to wait quite awhile to watch the girl do her thing on the big screen, as she'll next be starring alongside Josh Brolin in the bizarre supernatural action flick Jonah Hex (based on the popular graphic novel), due in theaters June 18. And for those (like me) who still can't figure out what this film is actually about, here's the synopsis that arrived alongside the first image of Brolin as Jonah Hex.

"Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin) is a scarred drifter and bounty hunter of last resort, a tough and stoic gunslinger who can track down anyone…and anything. Having survived death, Jonah's violent history is steeped in myth and legend, and has left him with one foot in the natural world and one on the 'other side.' His only human connection is with Leila (Megan Fox), whose life in a brothel has left her with scars of her own. But Jonah's past is about to catch up with him when the U.S. military makes him an offer he can't refuse: in exchange for his freedom from the warrants on his head, he must track down and stop the dangerous terrorist Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich). But Turnbull, who is gathering an army and preparing to unleash Hell, is also Jonah's oldest enemy and will stop at nothing until Jonah is dead. Based on the legendary graphic novel, "Jonah Hex" is an epic adventure thriller about one man's personal quest for redemption against the vast canvas of the battle between good and evil." [Omelete]

Director Talks 'Predators'

I know you're itching for more info on that new Predators film hitting theaters this summer, right? Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) is producing, and the film stars a juicy eclectic cast full of people like Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Danny Trejo and Alice Braga.

Speaking to ComingSoon about why they decided to cast the thin Adrien Brody in what we assume is the Arnold Schwarzenegger-type role, director Nimrod Antal said, "I think when we cast Adrian, there were a lot of people going, 'What?' but at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that. So we decided early on to go in a very different direction as far as the casting process, but it turned out fantastic. He plays a mercenary in the film and if you look at the guys in Iraq and Afghanistan today, they're not 'yolked-out' Schwarzenegger-looking guys. They're all very wiry and thin guys, and I think it's going to play well."

Predators arrives in theaters on July 7th, positioning it as one of next summer's big blockbusters. But will it erase the sour taste that both Alien vs. Predator movies left in our mouths? Guess we'll have to see…[Coming Soon]
