Saorise Ronan to Star in 'Twilight' Author Stephenie Meyer’s 'The Host'

With The Twilight Saga coming to a close next year, what are Twihards to do? The short answer – wait for the next Stephenie Meyer movie to be adapted for theaters, and to that end, we have some interesting news.

Oscar-nominated actress Saorise Ronan has been chosen to star in the film adaptation of the Twilight author’s humans versus aliens sci-fi romance novel, The Host. Deadline reports that Ronan will play Melanie Stryder, one of the last humans putting up a fight against an alien species called Souls, a parasite that invades human bodies and erases their personalities. Melanie is captured by aliens and implanted by a Soul called Wanderer, whose goal it is to get Melanie to surrender the remaining pockets of humans.
Ronan will reportedly play both Melanie and Wanderer and Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show, The Terminal) who penned the screen adaptation is a leading candidate to direct. The Host was released in May 2008 with an initial print run of 750,000 copies and spent 26 weeks at the top of The New York Times Best Seller list.
While The Host still lives in the world of the supernatural, it is a step up, both visually and story-wise from Twilight and, nothing against Kristen Stewart, but the casting of Ronan signals that filmmakers are treating this movie as more than just a campy summer blockbuster.
So let the casting rumors begin. Who should play the other main characters - Jared Howe, Jamie Stryder, Ian O’Shea, Kyle O’Shea and Uncle Jeb?
