SAG Award Noms: 'Lincoln,' 'Les Miserables' Lead the Way

Awards trackers got an early start Wednesday morning as the Screen Actors Guild announced its nominations for the 19th Annual SAG Awards at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.

The results were, in a word, surprising. While heavy-hitters such as Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables, and David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook continued to gain awards momentum, a number of unusual names made it into the race (at the expense of some deserving candidates).

Nicole Kidman, for example, received a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor is a Supporting Role for her turn in Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy, a film that few saw (and even less enjoyed). Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master also was left on the outside looking in at most races, failing to secure a Cast nomination – the SAG equivalent of a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars – or noms for Joaquin Phoenix or Amy Adams. Philip Seymour Hoffman did nab a nod for his performance as Lancaster Dodd in the Weinstein film.

Elsewhere, Javier Bardem picked up another vote in support of his turn as Silva in Sam Mendes’ James Bond thriller Skyfall. And the cast of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel can celebrate knowing that they are in the top category alongside Argo, Les Miserables, Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook

Those documenting the annual Oscar race have watched the big picture narrow this week. In addition to the SAG nominations, the Broadcast Film Critics Association announced its nominations for the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards (handing 13 noms to Lincoln). The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, meanwhile, plans to reveal its full slate of Golden Globes nominations on Thursday, Dec. 13.
