Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams Contemplate Retiring from Acting

Let’s hope in hindsight this is just a couple of actors in need of an extended vacation. The ‘net is buzzing with speculation that both Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams are contemplating retiring from acting.

Williams was first, with a quote from an interview she did with Hobo Magazine stating that she had thought about leaving acting behind and pursuing a career as a laundress or a sous chef. While weekly celeb entertainment magazines are running with that one line, the full quote, which takes up almost half a page, gives you the full story.

Williams was working in London with fellow actor Toby Jones, whose acting ability she greatly admires. She found out that he studied at L'Ecole Jacques in Paris along with Simon McBurney who stars in the upcoming Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and went to go check out Simon’s theater troupe.

According to Williams, "I felt like I had the sleep rubbed out of my eyes. It seemed like a new horizon for me." This was followed with the line that all the magazines/websites are running with – "I often dream of quitting acting. Walking away and becoming a laundress or sous chef or maybe writing other people's love letter for a living."

Williams continues that she thought about quitting and just going on in disguise, adding that, "when you get good at something, it is a sure sign that it is about to walk out of your life because it ceases to hold your mind and creative energy hostage."

Williams is currently working on Oz: The Great and Powerful, a prequel to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as told from the point of view of the Wizard. Outside of My Week with Marilyn in which she plays the iconic sex bomb Marilyn Monroe, Williams has no other projects lined up.

Gosling, meanwhile, spoke with the UK newspaper The Times saying, "I’ve been doing this since I was 12. I don’t want to act much longer; I can’t do one thing my whole life. I know there are only so many characters I’ll be able to play. It will be over wherever the inspiration dries up."

Currently starring in Drive, Gosling also starred in Crazy, Stupid, Love earlier this year and has another critically praised drama The Ides of March co-starring George Clooney out October 7th.

He just wrapped up starring in the crime drama The Place Beyond the Pines which reunited him with Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance and is currently working on Ruben Fleischer’s The Gangster Squad. Both movies are set for 2013 releases. Beyond these two films is his re-teaming with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn, Only God Forgives which is currently in pre-production and a proposed remake of Logan's Run. Outside of those three movies, Gosling has no other projects on the horizon. He does still perform with his band, Dead Man’s Bones.

Do you think either one of these talented actors, who co-starred in last year’s Blue Valentine, are on the edge of retiring? Or is this just the Hollywood P.R. machine trying to drum up publicity for their respective projects?
