Roland Emmerich Planning Cloverfield-like Alien Invasion Movie

He's already provided us with a number of big-budgeted ways to destroy the world in films like The Day After Tomorrow and 2012, but now director Roland Emmerich is returning to his alien lovin' roots (remember Independence Day?) for what Heat Vision calls a "super secret alien invasion movie."

'Independence Day'

It's called The Zone, and it's being billed as a low-budget alien invasion movie that will live in the newly hot-right-now "found footage" genre, a la movies like Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity. There's no plot synopsis to go by right now, though HV says it'll be improv-based with a cast of relative unknowns. Judging by the title, it would appear the film may have something to do with escaping an alien-infested zone (which would be a lot like the low-budget movie Monsters from this year), though that's just us making wild guesses based on titles alone.
This will be a major departure for Emmerich, who seems to be stretching his wings a bit and taking his career in another direction. He's already branched out to direct a period piece political thriller with the upcoming Anonymous, and now he's attempting an alien invasion movie with a budget of only $5 million (this from a guy who hasn't worked with a budget under $100 million since the 1994 movie Stargate).
Do you think he'll be able to pull it off, or does the film sound too similar to other alien invasion movies to catch your interest?
