Glamor and glitter, fashion and fame. Jem is now coming to life in a live-action movie!

Jem and the Holograms is based on the 1980s cartoon that followed the story of Jerrica and her holographic computer Synergy, whom she summons using her red-star earrings.

As the rock musician Jem, she and her friends battle their rival band the Misfits and go on crazy adventures. These pink-haired sugar cookies are an ode to the original Jem in anticipation of this fall’s big-screen adventure. These sweets are truly outrageous!

Jem Cookies

ingredients:

3 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup sugar

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter

1 egg

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

pink food-gel dye

You’ll need:

red icing

Jem cookie cutter, available from Sweet Prints, Inc.

Directions:

In a bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder and salt.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream the butter and the sugar until fluffy, then add the egg and vanilla.

Slowly add the flour mixture until just combined. Separate the dough into two, and dye one half of the dough pink with the food-gel dye.

Wrap the pink dough and vanilla dough separately in plastic wrap. Refrigerate until you are ready to use.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep baking sheets with Silpats or parchment.

Roll out the pink dough to about 3/8 inch thick to make sure you can capture all the detail. Dip the cookie cutter into flour and shake off the excess, then press the cookie cutter into the dough. Take a small knife and run it around the face, separating the cookie into two pieces so the hair is separate.

Move the hair to the prepped baking sheet and keep going, cutting out just the hair area from each cookie.

For the vanilla dough, roll out to 3/8 inch thick, flour cookie cutter and cut out just like you did with the pink dough. Cut around the same face and hair area, this time moving the face pieces into the missing areas of the pink dough, completing the cookie just like a puzzle piece.

Bake for 10 minutes and let cool on a wire rack.

Onto the cooled cookies, use a #2 tip to pipe red icing for Jem’s earrings.

Once the icing is dry the cookies are ready to serve.
