Robert Rodriguez Eyes Mel Gibson, Michelle Williams for 'Machete Kills'

On the heels of yesterday's big announcement that Sin City 2 would begin production this summer, Robert Rodriguez has also served up an update regarding the sequel to 2010's grindhouse flick Machete.

Deadline reports that Rodriguez is interested in casting Mel Gibson and Michelle Williams in the sequel, though what roles they would play were not revealed.

Earlier this year, a synopsis for the movie, which stars Danny Trejo in the title role was released.

The new film finds Machete recruited by the U.S. government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy.

Gibson has certainly struggled to get into the public's good graces. Accusations posted by a former screenwriting partner certainly didn't help. He lost out on a role in The Hangover Part II when the cast publicly protested his hiring and his recent films Edge of Darkness and The Beaver failed to make a splash at the box office. His next film, Get the Gringo, returns him to the action comedy genre but is going straight to video on demand (it will get a theatrical release in foreign markets).

Williams would certainly be a surprise addition to the cast. Coming off an Oscar nomination for My Week with Marilyn, she'll star in Sarah Polley's Take this Waltz, which gets a limited release June 29 and recently wrapped on the Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz: The Great and Powerful, due out March 8, 2013. She has no further projects on the horizon, though it would be interesting to see what role she would potentially play.

Machete Kills doesn't have a release date yet, though it's being slated for 2013. Along with Trejo, Tom Savini is the only other cast member confirmed. Ong-Bak star Tony Jaa was recently rumored to join the cast as well, though nothing has been confirmed.

Could you see either Gibson and Williams in this sequel? Who would they play?
