Robert Rodriguez Close to Directing 'Deadpool' Movie

Get ready to see a lot of Ryan Reynolds in superhero form because it looks like that Deadpool movie is becoming more and more a reality with each day that passes. The LA Times now claims that Robert Rodriguez – who was once rumored to be interested in helming the Deadpool movie – is now negotiating with Fox to direct, though there's no deal in place yet.

If he decides to do it, Rodriguez would begin work on Deadpool after he's done shooting Spy Kids 4 – both of which are due to come after this summer's grindhouse-like flick Machete (that Rodriguez fella sure likes variety in his directorial gigs, huh?). Ryan Reynolds played Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and it's assumed that he signed a deal at the time to reprise the character in any sequels or spin-offs. Reynolds has since spoken about playing Deadpool again, saying he'd love to give the character an entire movie that mixes action and comedy; a different sort of superhero film.
The question for fans should be: Can Reynolds pull off both The Green Lantern and Deadpool? Can one actor star as two comic characters in different films, or will it screw up something in the fanboy code of ethics? Rordriguez helming Deadpool does make me feel a little more comfortable about the project (I'm sure he'd give it a great original signature), but with X-Men: First Class on the way and another Wolverine movie being planned, do we really need a Deadpool film to begin with? Is the character popular enough – and will people even remember him from the last Wolverine movie?
