Robert Downey Jr., Jon Favreau Talk ‘Iron Man 3’

During an Iron Man double feature at the L.A. Times Hero Complex Film Festival this past weekend, Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau talked about Favreau’s involvement in the third film.

Favreau hinted very strongly that he would return as Tony Stark’s bodyguard, Happy Hogan, saying, “I want a love scene with Pepper Potts with my shirt on and I want to transform into The Freak.”
In the comics, Happy was mutated into a giant, superhumanly strong creature known as The Freak after an experiment to cure an illness went wrong.
Iron Man 3 director Shane Black consulted on the scripts of the two previous Iron Man movies which Favreau directed. Black helped spice up the dialogue and added input during the editing process.
Downey Jr. said, “Shane, interestingly enough, there was a point when Jon and I were stuck on an idea. We were just in an exploratory phase. So I said, ‘We should talk to Shane.’”
Earlier this year, Favreau laid out a very generic plotline. According to Favreau, Iron Man 3 “is going to be a sequel or continuation of Thor, Hulk, Captain America and Avengers. This whole world… I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys.”
Needless to say, there’s still plenty of time to flush out a plot for Iron Man 3, not to mention a villain. During press interviews for Iron Man 2, Favreau had teased that the next villain had to be The Mandarin, but held some reservations because of the way the character is depicted in the comic books.
Who do you think should be the next Iron Man villain and what should this third story be about? Iron Man 3 is tentatively scheduled to hit theaters May 3, 2013.
