No, thankfully Robert Downey Jr. won’t be starring in a film about the real-life story of that dude from the Mid-West who gave birth not once, but twice. Nope, we’re talking about the next film from director Todd Phillips (Old School, The Hangover), and it’s called Due Date. Variety tells us that Downey Jr. has just joined The Hangover’s Zach Galifianakis in the comedy about an expectant father (Downey Jr.) who heads out on a road trip with a mismatched partner (Galifianakis), racing to make it in time for the birth of his child. One expects a whole bunch of ridiculousness to happen to this duo along the way. In describing the film, Phillips called it a “buddy comedy without the buddies.”
It’ll be interesting to see Downey Jr. play the straight guy in a comedy, especially after watching him become a foul-mouthed black man for his role in Tropic Thunder last summer and a sharp-shooting wiseass for his role as Tony Stark in Iron Man. Phillips is best when he works with an ensemble, so look for more to be added to this cast before all is said and done. Due Date is expected to begin production this fall, and if I were to wager a guess I’d say it will hit theaters next summer.
