Rob Marshall to Direct 'Pirates of the Caribbean 4'!?

After rolling around in limbo for the past year or so once former Pirates director Gore Verbinski decided not to return for a fourth installment, Variety reports today that the studio is real close to bringing on Rob Marshall (Chicago) to direct Pirates of the Caribbean 4.

Marshall, who seems like an odd choice for director considering the fact that he's never helmed a big-budget summer blockbuster like this, would make it so production on the next installment could begin in 2010 for a potential 2011 release. Disney would like that particular scenario to play itself out because they want Johnny Depp (who'll be returning as Captain Jack Sparrow for the sequel) to be able to film Pirates 4 before he begins work on The Lone Ranger.

Meanwhile, as Marshall and Disney come to terms on his deal, the studio is said to be in the process of casting other characters to surround Captain Jack. Who will join Johnny Depp in the next sequel? Will Marshall throw in a few dance numbers to satisfy his core audience?

Sound off Pirate freaks: What do you think about Rob Marshall directing the fourth flick?
