Only a few days after learning that Emma Stone will be playing the new Gwen Stacey opposite Andrew Garfield in Sony's Spider-Man reboot (due out in 3D in 2012), the studio has announced via a press release that British actor Rhys Ifans will be playing the main villain in the movie. Two things to note right off the bat:
Rhys Ifans Cast as Spider-Man Villain!
1. The press release says Ifans "will play the villain", not one of the villains, leading us to believe the first installment of this new franchise will only include one central villain. A lot of people complained about too many villains clogging up Spider-Man 3, so perhaps the studio took that to heart, trimming things to only allow for one villain in this new film. Either that, or another villain will enter the equation and be played by multiple actors throughout (ie: Venom).
2. The studio decided not to reveal the villain at this time for reasons we do not know. However, when speaking about the character, director Marc Webb said this: "What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys' incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character." Warmth and rage, which means Ifans might be playing The Lizard, a character that started off as one of Peter Parker's professors (played by Dylan Baker in the previous installments) before becoming a villain. Plus Ifans is skinny and lizard-like to begin with, so we could see him playing that role.
Which Spider-Man villain do you hope Ifans will play? Lizard, Venom or someone else entirely?
