The first trailer for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes arrived online late last night (watch it here) and it was greeted by a whole mountain of mixed emotions. The film, which stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Sherlock Holmes and his trusty sidekick Watson, respectively, is a bit of a departure from what we’ve come to expect from the Holmes character over the years. Gone is the stuffy Brit who wears a ridiculous hat, uses a magnifying glass to solve crime and is kind of a bore – and, instead, Ritchie seems to have introduced a Holmes that’s a brawler, with multiple fight scenes, explosions, comic timing and…is this really all happening in the late 1800s? And is this the Sherlock Holmes we expected?
I personally love the trailer, with maybe those four cheesy slo-mo explosions at the end being the exception, and think it’s fun, original, exciting and, most of all, it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Those of you familiar with the old Holmes books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle will know that the original Holmes was more than a little nuts; the sort of guy who was always lost inside his own head – playing mind games with himself, his romantic interests and the criminals he chased. Watson, too, was a fighter, having served in the military – and so don’t let the action scenes dissuade you from this movie because Ritchie and his team worked hard to tap into some of what made the original books so special while giving it their own, unique spin.
My only concern with Ritchie at the helm is that we’ll get style over substance, but Downey Jr. is on a roll (he looks fabulous in this flick – especially while wearing some of those bizarre Victorian outfits), and so fingers crossed. What do you think? Sherlock Holmes hits theaters on Christmas Day.
