Plunge into Ben Stiller's Imagination in Fantastic 'Secret Life of Walter Mitty' Trailer

Wow. Who knew? It is completely possible, in 2013, for a single movie trailer to completely sell you on a magical movie… without spoiling an ounce of the plot.

20th Century Fox wins the prize for this breathtaking trailer cut for Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Author James Thurber’s short story has been adapted by Hollywood before, though Stiller’s take might be the most metaphysical, spiritual and big-thinking imaginative that we’ve yet to see. Check out the must-see trailer below:

Stiller’s version of Mitty is a photo editor at Life magazine (a double entendre if ever there was one) who spends his days pining over a pretty colleague (Kristen Wiig) and being bullied by an angry idiot in his office (Adam Scott). Based on the clip, Mitty gets tired of missing out on life, and finally embarks on a series of adventures… in his mind.

Stiller doesn’t get enough credit as a director. When he gets behind the lens, he has created such amazing features as Tropic Thunder, Reality Bites and The Cable Guy. He doesn’t direct enough, but maybe it’s better than he takes time off between features, because when he decides to direct, it’s usually something very, very special.

Fox will have Walter Mitty in theaters on Christmas Day. At a recent CinemaCon presentation, several bloggers said footage had them believing Stiller and Fox might have an Oscar contender on their hands, if they play their cards right. This trailer backs up that claim. Do you agree?
