'Pirates 4' Gets Their Orlando Bloom Replacement

Last week we told you how Disney was trying to decide between two actors for what is essentially the replacement for Orlando Bloom in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. No, they're not bringing back Bloom's character and getting someone else to play him – instead, they're simply looking to fill in the "hot young actor" gap that Bloom competently filled for the past three films. We reported that their choice was down to two relatively unknown actors -- Max Irons and Sam Claflin – and now we're here to tell you that a decision has been made, and Sam Claflin has been added to the cast.

Sam Claflin

Yeah, we don't really know much about Sam Claflin either, except that he's a young up-and-coming British actor who just seems to have busted into the business while starring in the series The Pillars of the Earth. Not much is known about the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film at this point, though there have been rumors that the plot will center on the fountain of youth. We do know, however, that Claflin will be playing a young missionary named Philip, but there are no details beyond that.
Due out in theaters on May 20th, 2011, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will star Johnny Depp (reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow), Ian McShane and Penelope Cruz. The film will be directed by Rob Marshall.
Do you think Claflin will add some fire to this cast, or should they have gone after someone a little more well known?
