Philip Seymour Hoffman Found Dead in New York

Sad news to report on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Wall Street Journal via Variety reported this morning that Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his apartment in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan. Hoffman was 46.

Hoffman won his Oscar in 2005 for Capote. The actor had most recently been seen as part of The Hunger Games cast portraying gamesmaker Plutarch Heavensbee in Catching Fire. He was scheduled to reprise the role in the two-part Hunger Games finale. No word on how much of his footage has been filmed.

The actor had also appeared at the Sundance Film Festival a few weeks ago to promote his new films God’s Pocket and A Most Wanted Man.

Law enforcement officials say the cause of death was a drug overdose. Hoffman was found in his bathroom by a screenwriter friend at 11:15 a.m.

Last year, Hoffman had completed a 10-day rehab course for heroin. Hoffman later revealed that he had been addicted to the drug when he was younger, but had been clean for almost 20 years.

Our sincerest condolences go to Hoffman's family and friends.
