Kubo and the Two Strings is set in ancient Japan, where Kubo along with Monkey and Beetle set out to find his father’s magical armor.
Like most adventurers on a quest (or just heading into the first day of school) you need something portable to eat along your journey. These monkey rice balls are the ideal snack whether you’re heading out on an adventure or tackling the first day of third grade.
Kubo and the Two Strings Monkey Rice Ball
(serves 4)
Ingredients:
1 cup short-grain rice
1-½ cups water
4 pieces of ham
Mayonnaise
Seaweed
Directions:
1. Give the rice a quick rinse, then add to a saucepan with 1 1/2 cups of water. Bring to a boil.
2. Cover and reduce heat, and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from heat, let sit for a few minutes, covered.
3. Fluff up the rice and place a scoop into the center of a piece of plastic wrap. Use the plastic wrap to shape the rice into a ball, making four in total.
4. Unwrap the plastic to reveal the formed rice ball. Cut the ham into monkey’s face shape and place on top. Add a small slice of ham for the mouth.
5. Add two small drops of mayonnaise for the eyes, then cut small pieces of seaweed to complete. Cut out two small pieces of seaweed for the nostrils.
