The Beatles had Help! and A Hard Day’s Night. U2 had Rattle & Hum. And while I’m in no way suggesting that pop sensations One Direction have reached the level of musical superstardom as those acts, the British lads now are going to have their own movie.
One Direction 3D Concert Movie Set for August
Sony has revealed that a One Direction 3D film, directed by noted documentarian Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me), will reach theaters on Aug. 30, 2013 … giving the movie a full Labor Day weekend to pack the multiplexes.
"This is an incredible opportunity and an amazing moment in time for the band," said Spurlock in a release from the studio. "To capture this journey and share it with audiences around the world will be an epic undertaking that I am proud to be a part of."
The band One Direction – made up by Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson – was discovered by Simon Cowell on the U.K. version of the televised talent show The X Factor back in 2010. They virtually exploded overnight, cranking out two albums and several hit songs including What Makes You Beautiful, One Thing and Live While We're Young.
The 3D pop movie is nothing new. Recently, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry have reached out to fans in box-office leading vehicles. And as mentioned with the Beatles and U2, the concept has been around for a while now. Tweens will be thrilled. Parents will bring ear plug.
