Nic Cage Confirmed for 'Expendables 3' by Sly Stallone [UPDATED]

Update: Deadline is reporting that the previously reported confirmation of Nicolas Cage's casting in The Expendables 3 is false. The statement which several sites, including ourselves, quoted was obtained from a Stallone Facebook fan page. Stallone was also quoted in the Spanish newspaper El Pais which, loosely translated, reads "We have confirmed Nicolas Cage...

Stallone says that he has "no knowledge" of Cage's casting, though an offer still stands should Cage decide to accept.

Earlier: Sylvester Stallone’s second Expendables had barely opened in theaters when rumors of a third chapter began to swirl. Stallone even had his casting Wish List at the time, from Clint Eastwood to Wesley Snipes. Now that the third film actually has been greenlit, Stallone decided he could begin revealing casting, and he took to Facebook today to confirm that Nicolas Cage is, in fact, expendable.

“We have confirmed Nicolas Cage, a master actor who gives a veneer intellectual group,” Stallone posted to the social media Web site.

But he didn’t stop there.

“Hopefully we can realize to Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes and Mickey Rourke,” Stallone continued. “That is the great mission of the producer.”

As Stallone confirmed, he only planned two Expendables films. But the results at the box office have shown that audiences want more, and the actor/director is more than happy to feed the need.

Cage is an odd choice for an Expendables movie. While many have expressed interest in seeing what kind of wild-card intensity Cage might bring to the team, the 48-year-old actor hasn’t necessarily been thought of as an action star (though, yes, his resume is populated with assorted action films).

So The Expendables 3 is gearing up, and Cage is on board. Do you think he’s a good addition to the crew? And do you think the remaining three icons should throw their hats into the ring?
