News Briefs: 'Power Rangers' Due in 2016; 'Texas Chainsaw' Prequel Coming

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Power Rangers: An updated version of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will come to the big screen on July 22, 2016. That's the release date for Power Rangers, which will reboot the 1990s TV show (and the 1995 movie version, above) for a new generation, based on a story by Roberto Orci (Transformers, Star Trek). Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class, Thor) are writing the script about a group of high school kids who must harness extraterrestrial powers to save the world.

The Interview

The Interview: Recently we heard that upcoming comedy The Interview, starring James Franco and Seth Rogen as a TV personality and his producer who are hired by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, had been pushed from October to December 25. Now comes word that Sony Pictures is digitally altering "thousands" of buttons worn in the film because they would be considered "blasphemous" in the country; the studio is also considering removing a scene in which a key character's face is melted off in slow motion, reportedly because it may not be funny enough. Texas Chainsaw 3D

Leatherface: Though we had the reboot Texas Chainsaw 3D just last year (above), the next installment in the horror series will serve as a prequel to the original 1974 film. Seth M. Sherwood has been hired to draft the screenplay for Leatherface, which will serve as a -- gulp! -- origin story for the serial killer, detailing his exploits in the early 1970s. We're guessing that the origin story set in 1969 and told in 2006's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning will be rebooted as well. [The Wrap]

Revenge of the Green Dragons

Revenge of the Green Dragons Trailer: In the 1980s New York City received a wave of immigrants from China, some of whom were not exactly, er, upright citizens. In the trailer for Revenge of the Green Dragons, we see how things play out when two immigrant brothers join a Chinatown gang and rise up through the ranks. Presented by Martin Scorsese and directed by Andrew Lau (who codirected Infernal Affairs, which Scorsese remade as The Departed), and Andrew Loo, the film stars Justin Chon, Kevin Wu and Ray Liotta; it's heading to theaters in October.
