News Bites: 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' Photos; First Deadly 'The Purge: Anarchy' Trailer

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Two new photos reveal a look behind the scenes of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which is heading for theatrical release on July 11. In both, we see actors (including an angry Toby Kebbell and a horse-bound Andy Serkis) wearing "mo-cap" (motion-capture) suits, before they are transformed into highly detailed apes in the postproduction process. Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman and Judy Greer also star. [Empire]

Disney's Magic Movie: Sure, there have been plenty of movies about magicians and magic acts, but how many have been able to boast about having a real magician on board as producer? Derek DelGaudio, a top-flight illusionist who is known for his card tricks and sleight-of-hand talents, will serve as producer on a project underway at Disney. Reportedly, the movie will "tackle the history of magic’s last 100 years as seen through the eyes of one magician." [Heat Vision]

Oculus: Our own Peter S. Hall called Oculus "one of the best American horror movies in years," which makes us even more eager to see it when it hits theaters on April 11. Beyond positive notices from critics, however, it seems that the film has also received a publicity bounce from Facebook's recent $2 billion acquisition of a virtual reality company… that just happens to be called Oculus Rift (which Mr. Hall also wrote about last year). Social media users immediately began making mash-ups of the company and the movie; writer-director Mike Flanagan says: "It’s great, just as far as title awareness." [Mashable]

The Purge: Anarchy Trailer: The teaser for The Purge: Anarchy promised to take the horror outdoors, away from the gated community where last summer's surprise hit took place. The first, full-length trailer goes much further, establishing how much higher the stakes have become, and how dangerous it is for anyone caught outside. The movie opens on July 18. [Universal]
