The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Heath Ledger died in the midst of making this film about a ringleader of a magic circus who made a deal with the devil that could cost him his daughter. If it wasn't for Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law, who stepped in to finish the film as Ledger's character, this weird and kind of wonderful film may never have seen the light of day.
Extras: Director Terry Gilliam commentary, Ledger's wardrobe test and behind-the-scenes featurettes (DVD); all that plus "Heath Ledger and Friends," cast and crew speak about working with him and his passing (BD).
It's Complicated Meryl Streep is in the center of a love triangle that includes her ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) and a recently divorced architect (Steve Martin) smitten by her. What's a middle-aged divorcee to do? Extras: "The Making of" and director commentary (DVD/BD).
District B13: Ultimatum Hardcore cop Damien and vigilante Leito team up again after two years to save the doomed District 13, a ghetto being persecuted by rogue cops and government officials and set up to take the blame for the killing of some police officers on patrol. Parkour, anyone? This French film directed by Luc Besson has little plot but loads of stunts and martial arts madness.
Transylmania An outrageous sex romp spoofing the current spate of vampire flicks follows misfit co-eds studying overseas in--where else would one get an education? Transylvania, natch. And of course they're housed in a gothic castle haunted by angry dwarves, humpbacked hotties and bloodsucking vampires. Unrated DVD only. Extras: Alternate opening and ending, gag reel, deleted/extended scenes, commentary, more.
The Descent: Part 2 This sequel to one of the most panic-inducing horror films ever made (rent it if you don't believe me) brings the heroine back to the scene. When she can't explain to the authorities what happened, she's forced to go back down into the Appalachian cave system--with horrific results. DVD only. Extras: Commentary, deleted scenes, making-of, storyboards.
New on Blu
Dune David Lynch's embattled sci-fi cult favorite starring Kyle McLachlan in his feature debut was reviled by critics and Lynch has since distanced himself from it, but the Blu-ray (the original movie, not the extended director's cut, thankfully) looks terrific and who can resist that Toto soundtrack in HD?
