New on DVD: ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,’ ‘The Final Destination’

Sony gives Pixar a run for its money with this animated kid flick based on the beloved book of the same name, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, in which a scientist’s best intentions go wrong with his invention of a machine that creates food out of water. When giant hamburgers, pancakes and other comestibles suddenly start falling from the sky instead of rain, the scientist teams up with a brainy news weathergirl to find out what’s going on—and stop it before giant meatballs and spaghetti tornadoes destroy the world.

The Final Destination This fourth entry in the death-defying franchise doesn’t hold a candle to the first two, and you won’t find yourself mourning its thinly developed and unlikable characters’ demise one bit. That said, this horror outing about a group of people who escape certain death after an accident at the racetrack manages to entertain if only to see what methods the Grim Reaper uses to even the score. If you can handle the cheap paper red-and-blue  specs, give it a look-see in 3D for sure. Best extras (BD only): “Body Count,” the creation of the death scenes, 2D digital copy on disc
