New on DVD: 'Cloud Atlas,' 'Frankie Go Boom.' Plus, Win a Blu-ray Player!

Cloud Atlas  The Wachowski sibs' incredibly ambitious race-time-gender-space-crossing sci-fi drama based on David Mitchell's massive novel features an all-star cast  in six tales that weave and wander from the 19th century to a distant post-apocalyptic future. Along the way you meet Tom Hanks as, among other things, a Hawaiian tribesman; Hugh Grant as a cannibal warrior; Halle Berry as a whistle-blowing journalist; Jim Broadbent as an aging composer and Hugo Weaving as a villain in all six stories. Though three hours may be a tad long, it's pretty much always entertaining, with eye-popping action sequences, beautiful visuals and a romantic through-line that drives home the movie's theme "everything is connected." Most giggle-worthy: the parade of prosthetics, and Berry and Hanks having entire conversations in nearly incomprehensible pidgin. Extras: 7 featurettes, including one on how the supposedly unfilmmable book was adapted, and the science fiction behind the story. (BD combo pack only)

Frankie Go Boom (with giveaway!) Ron Perlman is the latest male actor to go drag in this quirky indie comedy that has him playing a transsexual computer hacker enlisted by two brothers to undo damage caused when one of them uploads footage of a one-night stand with the daughter of a crazy ex-movie star. Also starring Charlie Hunnam, Chris O'Dowd, Lizzy Caplan and Chris Noth. Extras: Behind the scenes, deleted/alternate scenes, featurette on one of the film's most memorable characters -- a pig. (DVD/BD)
