Natalie Portman Inching Closer to Sci-Fi Film 'Gravity'

It's a film that's seen several high-profile ladies circle the main role. From Angelina Jolie to Sandra Bullock to Blake Lively, it's the sort of part that can either make or break an actress, and it's one that Natalie Portman seems interested in taking on.

Directed by Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men), Gravity is a sci-fi flick that takes place on a space station following a deadly accident that kills everyone onboard except for one female. That female – which, if negotiations go through, will be played by Natalie Portman – then spends the remainder of the film trying to figure out a way back home.
Because the role calls for the lead female to be alone, on screen, for almost the entire film, it's a fairly tough task to take on. Should Portman officially sign on, though, this is the kind of role that could snag the girl back-to-back Oscar nominations, assuming, of course, she's nominated for Black Swan (and everyone thinks she will be).
Robert Downey Jr. is also involved with the film, though we're not sure who he'll be playing. Early rumors suggested he was playing one of the members of the team who's killed early on, though unless he's set to re-appear in flashbacks, it seems like an awful waste to have Downey Jr. and kill him off right away. Perhaps he'll be playing someone trying to rescue Portman – that would make more sense.
Are you a fan of Cuaron? Do you think Portman can handle a role this difficult? Sound off below!
