Brit actor, comedian and two-time VMA host Russell Brand will lead the festivities this Sunday at the 21st Annual MTV Movie Awards, airing live from the Gibson Amphitheatre on Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. We got a chance to chat with Brand before his big night and he surprisingly admitted not having prepared much before the star-studded event.
“I’ve been really busy,” said Brand. “I said I could only do the awards show with no preparation and no rehearsal and they went, ‘Yea, alright.’”
Brand, known for his eccentric and controversial comments, promises he’ll be on his best behavior.
“I don’t go after people,” said Brand. “I’m not that sort of person. I will just be very loving and joyful but hopefully having some fun also. I don’t make fun of anyone, I love everyone. I always think of how I would feel if I had to talk to that person afterwards. There will be jokes of course, you got to make jokes, there has to be a bit of disruption but the idea of hurting someone’s feelings is pointless.”
If you’re thinking what we’re thinking, well, we’ll need to see it to believe it. After all, this is the same guy that during the 2008 VMA’s called former President George W. Bush “a retarded cowboy fella", who, in England, "wouldn't be trusted with scissors.”
So who does Brand think will take home the most movie awards?
“Bridesmaids and The Hunger Games will win loads,” guessed Brand. “I don’t know? I only have to do the announcements. I don’t know about the prizes, they used to tell me about stuff like that but then they found out I just tell people things.”
Brand did confess to wanting his own golden popcorn statue for best on-screen kiss. He’s already talking about his own smooching scene in Rock of Ages with Alec Baldwin.
“I would like an award for best kiss for Rock of Ages with Alec Baldwin,” said Brand. “It was right on the mouth. It was sexy because Alec is a sexy man. I only kissed him because the script demanded it. I certainly don’t regret it and I would do it again if there was a sequel.”
As for his other Rock of Ages co-star, Tom Cruise, well, he has nothing but praise for the mega-star.
“Brilliant, he’s like a big charismatic hurricane smashing through your life,” said Brand. “You'd think if someone was the biggest movie star in the world, you wouldn't be so interested in other people. But he's very caring. He's serious but sweet, a joy to be around.”
“Tom bought me a really nice birthday present, with all of my favorite things. He gave me a nice new yoga mat and cooked me nice food. He bought me all of my favorite foods. I thought, ‘How does he know all of this stuff?’ He was like Father Christmas.”
We’ll have more on Brand, the celebs and all of the awards coming up tomorrow. We’ll be live tweeting from the Gibson Amphitheater on Sunday so be sure to follow us @elisaosegueda and @Fandango for the latest on the MTV Movie Awards.
