Move Over, Transformers. Here Come...Trolls?
Move over, G.I. Joe and the Transformers. Yet another popular toy will inspire an on-screen adventure as DreamWorks Animation announces plans for a Trolls feature film, though we’re still in the very early stages.
EW.com first reported (via ComingSoon) that DWA acquired the rights to the Dam Family’s crazy-haired creatures for the purpose of translating them to the big screen. American Girl veteran Shawn Dennis has been tapped to head the brand development of this classic toy line. On a potential franchise, Dennis says:
"Trolls is one of those rare, proven and universally adored brands. There is incredible potential here to engage kids across multiple platforms in a way that is fun, enduring and meaningful. It is truly an amazing opportunity to be able to re-launch a brand like this one."
“Trolls is a brand with over fifty years of deep heritage and we are thrilled to bring this iconic, multi-generational property to DreamWorks Animation," added Chief Operating Officer Ann Daly. "We have big plans for this franchise and Shawn Dennis is uniquely suited to lead this charge. She helped grow the American Girl brand into a household name and by bringing this expertise to Trolls she will introduce these characters to legions of new fans around the world."
The franchise DreamWorks can point to as a blueprint for Trolls to follow is the Smurfs, which cranked out a huge family hit from a long-gestating family franchise, and plans to build on that success this summer with The Smurfs 2.
Did you play with Trolls as a kid? Are you looking forward to introducing your own kids to the Trolls via a new movie? Share your thoughts as we continue to track where the Trolls will go from here.
