'Monsters University' Cleverly Spoofs College Ads During Rose Bowl

Viewers tuning in to Monday’s Rose Bowl telecast, pitting Stanford University against the University of Wisconsin, were treated to a tease for a whole different type of school that isn’t exactly accepting applications or preparing for a college football bowl game.

Disney and Pixar decided to share a new TV spot for the upcoming Monsters University, the prequel to Pixar’s Monsters Inc. that will trace the early days of best-friend creatures Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman). Set at the University of Fear, the prequel will explain how these two polar opposites grew to become an inseparable team.

Here’s the clip, in case you missed it:

What I love most is the fact that neither Mike nor Sulley are even shown in the clip. Pixar has enough trust in the Monsters brand that they can tease a movie  with a clever spoof on traditional college commercials, then hope that enough people visit MonstersUniversity.com/edu to learn more about the film.

Earlier, Pixar also teased some creative artwork showing the process of developing the movies on the studio’s horizon. Here’s the one for Monsters U. You can see the rest of the artwork here

Monsters University continues the story set out in Monsters Inc. It will be in theaters in 2D and 3D on June 21, opening opposite Brad Pitt’s World War Z. Do you plan to see Pixar’s latest? And will you grab a 3D ticket, as well?
