Michael Bay Picks Director for Air Pirate Flick, 'Machete Kills' Stakes Release Date, 'Burt Wonderstone' Opens SXSW

While Michael Bay is currently putting the final touches on his upcoming buddy action comedy Pain and Gain and prepping for Transformers 4 afterward, the director has added another project to his to-do list.

THR reports that Bay has selected Timur Bekmambetov to direct an aerial action movie he's producing titled Heatseekers, about an ex-military pilot who takes on a group of aerial pirates.

Bekmambetov last helmed Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Wanted. The script is being written by F. Scott Frazier, whose only writing credit thus far is a yet-to-be-released thriller, The Numbers Station starring Malin Akerman and John Cusack.

No release date has been set yet. Are you curious to see what the combination of Bay and Bekmambetov results in?

Speaking of release dates, Robert Rodriguez's sequel to the 2010 B-movie grindhouse hit Machete has nailed down a release date. Machete Kills is set to slash its way into theaters on September 13.

Joining Danny Trejo in the sequel are Amber Heard, Mel Gibson, Sofia Vergara, Charlie Sheen, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Antonio Banderas, Cuba Gooding Jr., Lady Gaga, William Sadler and Demian Bichir along with Michelle Rodriguez and Jessica Alba reprising their roles from the first film.

SXSW is just around the corner (March 8-17 to be exact) and the festival has announced some of the films that will be showcased during the event.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone will have its world premiere as will the Evil Dead reboot. The Harmony Korine film Spring Breakers starring James Franco, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine will make its U.S. Premiere at the festival.

Burt Wondertsone will be the opening night movie. Screening dates for Evil Dead and Spring Breakers remain TBD.

The festival will release more screenings and films in the coming weeks. As we've done for the past few years, we'll have full coverage of SXSW right here on Fandango.
