Mel Gibson Confirmed by Sly Stallone As 'The Expendables 3' Villain

The Expendables 3 has found its villain… and we’re going to have to register him as a "lethal weapon."
Sylvester Stallone took to Twitter last night to confirm that Mel Gibson has joined the action franchise – where fading stars go to be reborn again – in a villainous role. How did Sly do it? By telling his followers to expect “Mad Max vs. Barney Ross…”
The roster grows exponentially with each new Expendables franchise. The core soldiers of Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li and Mickey Rourke are joined by a series of interchangeable parts, from Bruce Willis to Arnold Schwarzenegger. The rumored stars for Stallone’s third chapter range from Nicolas Cage and Wesley Snipes to Milla Jovovich, Steven Seagal and, now, Gibson.
As much as we want to chuckle at the Expendables franchise, the movies make money… and they have succeeded in reuniting virtually every major action movie from the Golden Age of Stallone’s filmmaking period. If you had told the 12-year-old version of myself that Willis, Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Gibson had the potential to share the same screen, my geek brain would explode.
Of course, there’s a PR headache that comes with casting Gibson, who has had his troubles offscreen. But maybe an Expendables role is the right step toward mending fences with the moviegoing public. What do you think?
The Expendables 3 is expected in theaters on August 15, 2014, so more casting confirmations should start hitting the wire as director Patrick Hughes gets things underway.
