Meet Your New Superman – Henry Cavill!

The wait is finally over, and in a joint announcement Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have informed us that British actor Henry Cavill has landed the coveted role of Superman in the new film, to be directed by Zack Snyder.

Henry CavillCavill is one of those guys who’s been lingering around the edges of Hollywood, just itching to burst out in a big way. You may already be familiar with some of his work from the show The Tudors (where he plays Charles Brandon), or from some of his bit roles in films like Whatever Works, Stardust and Blood Creek. Prior to seeing him don the famous cape in 2012, you’ll be able to see Cavill star as Theseus in Immortals (where he’ll get his Greek God battle on), as well as the character of Will Shaw in The Cold Light of Day (opposite Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver).

Those following superhero casting closely won’t see this as such a big surprise. Cavill has been up for the role of Batman before just losing out to Christian Bale, and he had also been looked out by Bryan Singer back when he was doing his Superman movie. Definitely a more sophisticated actor than Brandon Routh (the last Superman), which should come in handy in terms of franchise potential.

On choosing Cavill, director Zack Snyder said, “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield."

Of course some have argued that Cavill doesn’t deserve the role because he’s British, but so are Andrew Garfield (Spider-Man) and Christian Bale (Batman). Do you see that as being a bad thing, or should we judge an actor on the quality of their performance and not where they grew up?
