Marvel Taps Paul Rudd As Its 'Ant-Man'

Call it a case of dominoes falling. With the news this week that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was developing a Sandman movie, Marvel announced today that the other front-runner to play the title character in Ant-Man had been cast.

That's right. Paul Rudd is Ant-Man. Sort of.

Variety broke the news of the Anchorman 2 star's potential casting this afternoon. The trade reports that Rudd is in "early negotiations" to star in the first film of Marvel's Phase Three lineup of films.

Edgar Wright is directing and cowriting the film. Marvel had no official comment on the potential casting as it will likely make its own announcement soon.

Rudd was always an interesting and unexpected candidate for the role. Known more for his comedic roles, he'll be sinking his teeth into Marvel's expansive, action-heavy universe.

Ant-Man will likely pick up from the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, which is due in theaters May 1, 2015. Ant-Man, which has long been in development, was recently bumped up from its initial planned release date. The film will hit theaters July 31, 2015.
