"Maleficent' Trailer Increases the Magic in Latest Disney Tease

What an amazing trailer.

Maleficent tells the story of Sleeping Beauty, only from the perspective of the evil villain who eventually casts a spell over the fairy tale’s traditional heroine. Angelina Jolie brings an abundance of star power and magnetism to Maleficent, which Disney will bring to theaters this summer. A second trailer arrived online this afternoon. We’re happy to share it below:

Did anything trip you up in the clip? I might have paused at the claim that “Disney’s greatest villain comes to life.” Is Maleficent really the GREATEST villain in the studio’s rich, vast history? You could make an argument for multiple, dark characters from Disney movies past, but with Jolie in the lead, you can see why Disney’s betting big on the success of this modern fairy tale.
Directed by Robert Stromberg, Maleficent calls to mind recent attempts at bringing bedtime magic to life on-screen, from Snow White and the Huntsman to Jack the Giant Slayer. If there’s a contemporary Disney feature to which we can connect, look to Oz the Great and Powerful, which applied cutting-edge special effects to a timeless tale.
Will the Wicked approach help turn Sleeping Beauty on its ear, and turn Maleficent into a huge success? Find out when the movie opens everywhere on May 30.
