For those keeping track of the ongoing Oscar race, there are still a few major, major players yet to drop. Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained (which just released a new trailer), Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina, Ang Lee’s Life of Pi and Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty are expected to be heavy hitters. They’ll hit theaters in November and December.
But few titles should be quite as massive – from an awards perspective – as Les Miserables. Director Tom Hooper is coming off of his Oscar-winning crowd-pleaser, The King’s Speech. He assembled a staggering cast of performers and singers for his cast, from Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe to Hugh Jackman. And they are tackling one of the most acclaimed musicals in Broadway history.
What could go wrong?
Universal recently let Disney and Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln have its day in the sun, thanks to a splasy “Secret Screening” at the New York Film Festival. Now the studio is starting to roll out Les Mis materials, starting with character posters for Jean Valjean (Jackman) and Javert (Crowe). We have them below.
Les Miserables will reach theaters on Dec. 25. Could it be the next Chicago? Or will it fall short? We’ll see soon enough.
