No, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mel Gibson won't be making a movie about the Minnesota Vikings' Cinderella season. Instead, the two Hollywood powerhouses are joining forces for an untitled period film about Viking culture. Yup, those Vikings.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Mel Gibson Team for Viking Movie
Variety tells us that Mel Gibson will direct the movie and Leonardo DiCaprio will star. As of right now, the plan is to push the film into production next fall. With DiCaprio in the lead role, this will be the first Gibson-directed film to star a big-name actor (aside from the films that starred Gibson himself, like Braveheart and The Man Without a Face). It also comes with a pretty solid team behind the scenes, as William Monahan (The Departed) wrote the script, and Graham King (The Departed) is producing.
Not much at all is being said about the film's plot, except that DiCaprio – who's always been fascinated with Viking culture – will play one in the film (even though I think he looks a bit wimpy to play a rough-and-tough Viking dude). I do wonder, though, if folks will reign in Gibson's fondness for shooting period films in their native language, and just have everyone speaking English in order to make the film more marketable.
What do you think about DiCaprio and Gibson working on a Viking movie? Can you envision pretty boy DiCaprio as a Viking? Or does the thought of it make you chuckle a little bit?
