Normally it’s a problem when sequels start adding superfluous characters to the core cast. Let’s call it the Lethal Weapon Syndrome, which added at least one major character to each sequel to the point where Mel Gibson and Danny Glover were mere afterthoughts to Chris Rock, Renee Russo, Jet Li and Joe Pesci.
But if Adam McKay’s planning on adding supreme comedic talents like Kristen Wiig to Anchorman: The Legend Continues, we are completely on board with that.
The director confirmed on Twitter that the Bridesmaids comedian is “officially on board” for the sequel, which we believe is going to begin filming in Atlanta. She’ll play the wife of Steve Carell’s dense character, Brick Tamland.
Wiig will join a cast that already includes original stars Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd and David Koechner. And from what we are hearing, the movie might be crammed with celebrity cameos from comedians who call themselves fans of the original.
Anchorman is one of the few projects that, I believe, can improve by adding supporting characters. When you go back and watch it, scenes often are stolen by comedians who are drop-dead funny in tiny roles, from Jack Black as a dog-punting biker to Fred Willard as a TV station manager. Hilarious.
The sequel is aiming for a Dec. 20 release date. Whom else do you think McKay should add to the cast?
